Mawa Gujiya Recipe a Traditional Indian Sweet Delight
Mawa Gujiya is a popular Indian sweet, especially made during festivals like Holi and Diwali. It is a deep fried pastry filled with a delicious mixture of mawa (khoya), dry fruits and sugar filling make it a favorite treat for all ages.
Ingredients:
For the Dough,
. 2 cups all purpose flour (maida)
. 4 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
. Water, as needed
For the Filling:
. 1 cup mawa (khoya), grated
. 1/2 cup powdered sugar
. 2 tbsp chopped almonds
. 2 tbsp chopped cashews
. 2 tbsp raisins
. 1/2 tbsp cardamom powder
. 2 tbsp grated dry coconut (optional)
For Frying & Garnishing:
. Ghee or oil, for deep frying
. Chopped pistachios or silver vark (optional)
Step by Step Recipe:
Step 1 : Prepare the Dough
. In a mixing bowl, add all purpose flour and ghee. Rub the ghee into the flour until it forms a crumbly texture
. Gradually add water and knead into a stiff yet smooth dough. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes
Step 2 : Prepare the Filling
. Heat a pan on low flame and the grated mawa. Stir continuously and cook until it turns light golden brown. Let it cool
. Once cooled, mix powdered sugar, chopped dry fruits, cardamom powder and grated coconut. Stir well to combine
Step 3 : Shape the Gujiyas
. Divide the dough into small balls and roll them into thin circles (about 4 inches in diameter)
. Place 1-2 tbsp of the prepared filling in the center of rach circle
. Apply a little water along the edges and fold it into a half moon shape
. Press the edges firmly and use a fork to seal or pleat them for a decorative look
Step 4 : Fry the Gujiyas
. Heat ghee/oil in a deep pan over medium heat
. Fry the gujiyas in batches on low to medium heat until they turn golden brown and crispy
. Drain excess oil on a paper towel
Step 5 : Garnishing (Optional)
. You can garnish the gujiyas with silver vark and chopped pistachios for an elegant look
. Some people like to dip them in sugar syrup for extra sweetness
Serving & Storage:
. Serve the Mawa Gujiya warm or at room temperture
. Store in an airtight container for up to a week
